Big Pine Key’s Deer Run Bed & Breakfast has been awarded with Florida’s Green Lodging Program accreditation for offering organic vegetarian meals, fair-trade products and locally grown produce.The program, a voluntary state-run initiative, encourages cost-saving green practices while establishing environmental guidelines for conserving natural resources and enhancing waste management practices. To date, the program endorses 43 hotels throughout Florida.
Deer Run has addressed the property’s energy consumption with the installation of new energy-efficient products such as appliances, light bulbs, solar lighting, and plumbing. The property also stocks recycled paper products, composts food and yard waste, and uses eco-friendly cleaners.
