The Carousel Center Mall, a 1.5 million square foot, seven-story shopping and entertainment complex on the shore of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, New York, is getting the addition of a $450 million, 40-story green hotel. The development, by Robert Congel, owner of the Pyramid Cos., will be partly powered by roof-mounted rainwater turbines.
The hotel itself is destined to be the cornerstone of Destiny USA: a 75-million-square-foot retail, hotel, and entertainment complex touted as the world’s most sustainable project.
Destiny USA is bringing an array of “green development” initiatives to the table, including its own renewable-energy power plant, lateral elevator system, monorail, and car-free centers. In a show of support, the U.S. Green Building Council purchased $50,000 of the tax-exempt green bonds awarded to the project.
