This week, Continental Airlines announced its new carbon offsetting program. The program enables customers to view their “carbon footprint” for a particular booked itinerary and then make a contribution to Sustainable Travel International, Continental’s partner in the program.
Proceeds from customer contributions to fund the purchase of carbon offsets, which are generated from high-impact sustainable development projects that are designed to reduce the impact of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
Over the last 10 years, Continental has achieved an almost 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption per mainline revenue passenger mile. This is due in large part to the efforts of its employees in streamlining operational procedures and to an investment of more than $12 billion to acquire 270 fuel-efficient aircraft and related equipment.
In addition, Continental can also provide reports to their corporate customers regarding the carbon emissions associated with their business travel.
