Established in 2001, the Center for Tourism and Cultural Change (CTCC) at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK is one of the leading international platforms for tourism research.
As a transdisciplinary research organisation with a global network of research partners and professional collaborators, the focus of the CTCC is on the multi-dimensional relationships which exist between tourism and culture(s).
Tourism is one of the most important and rapidly expanding economic, social and cultural phenomena of the contemporary world. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, tourism has become globally the most important economic sector since the mid-1990s and is expected to continue its rapid growth. By 2020 it is estimated that there will be more than 1.5 billion annual tourist arrivals worldwide.
Through academic research, collaborative projects, consultancy, conferences, publications, professional development and postgraduate programs, the CTCC aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities of tourism as a global phenomenon at different social and political scales. They are interested in the theoretical and political issues related to tourism / tourist culture, tourism development, and the mobilization of cultural resources by, and for, the tourism sector. We are also interested in assessing the potential of tourism to promote and support cultural diversity, stimulate intercultural dialogue and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
Through their partners and conference series, the CTCC animates one of the largest multidisciplinary networks of tourism scholars in the world. With more than twenty researchers and staff hosted in the Old School Board building in the heart of Leeds, the CTCC offers one of the most vibrant environments for the postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral study of tourism and culture relationships.
