Athens International Airport has announced two new environmental projects in line with this year’s World Environment Day, supporting local educational initiatives that promote environmental activities and studies.
The first project is for the preservation of the Vavrona wetland, including the clean-up of the area, placement of signage and improvement of the walkways. The second is the commencement of the planning phase for the construction of a 24,000m2 green area in the municipality of Spata, which will include tree and other flora planting, and the construction of pathways and recreation kiosks. This is the sixth urban green project undertaken by the airport in the neighboring area of Messoghia, as part of the environmental improvement and upgrade of the region.
The airport confirms that it will support for another year the supply of educational material and school equipment, together with the organization of environmental activities, to schools within the municipality of Artemis as a reward for the pupil’s participation in the airport’s recycling programme. Since the end of 2005, the children have recycled over 23 tonnes of paper and aluminium.
For the sixth consecutive year, the airport is offering two environmental scholarships to graduate students of the University of the Aegean’s Department of Environmental Studies on topics related to environmental management.
