Air travel industry tracks climate change online
Enviro.aero highlights the technology, operations and infrastructure efficiencies that are both in research as well as in production throughout the globe, providing feedback to the public on the effects the industry has on climate change as well as other environmental factors.
A popular online tool for the airline industry to keep tabs on its own contributions to environmental issues, like climate change, has gotten a makeover. Enviro.aero, an online initiative of the commercial air industry, highlights the technology, operations and infrastructure efficiencies that are both in research as well as in production throughout the globe. Its goal is to provide valid feedback to the public on the effects the industry has on climate change as well as other environmental factors.
“In April, chief executives representing all sectors of the aviation industry including the largest aircraft and engine manufacturers, gathered in Geneva to sign the Commitment to Action on Climate Change," says Paul Steele, Executive Director of cross-industry coordination body the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). "This declaration has resulted in even greater collaboration across the industry on tackling this important challenge."
“We are seeing airports, airlines and air navigation providers working together to see how each party can help the other to reduce overall environmental impacts. The makers of aircraft - normally tough competitors - are working together to find solutions to environmental challenges. On a global basis, industry bodies are developing new procedures and processes that underpin the actions by all parts of the industry."
The new-look www.enviro.aero website has been established to provide members of the flying public and those working in the industry with the science and facts on aviation and its climate change impact, while also detailing the huge amount of work being undertaken across the industry.
Enviro.aero has been established by the commercial aviation industry body, the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). ATAG is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is the only global association that represents all sectors of the air transport industry. Its mission is to promote aviation’s sustainable growth for the benefit of global society.
ATAG’s members include airports, airlines, airframe and engine manufacturers, air navigation service providers, airline pilot and air traffic controller unions, chambers of commerce, tourism and trade partners, ground transportation and communications providers.
ATAG organises an annual Aviation & Environment Summit . In 2008 the summit resulted in an industry commitment for action on climate change, whereby 13 major companies and organisations pledged to work towards a carbon-free future. Over 120 other airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, and international and regional associations have supported this declaration .
Enviro.aero is supported and financed by the commercial aviation industry under the umbrella of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). Its purpose is to provide clear information on the many industry measures underway to limit the impact of aviation on the environment.
“As the world continues to focus on tackling the important issue of climate change, industries, governments and individuals have to assess and limit their impact," Steele continued. “I am proud to say that aviation’s coordinated approach to reducing its environmental footprint has already demonstrated major progress in improving fuel efficiency, reducing noise and eradicating soot. The industry is well on track to achieve even more. In fact, it would be hard to find another industry that has already achieved so much.
“With the backing of all the major players, aviation will have a future that ensures we can continue to serve the world economy, while using the latest technology, operational procedures and an efficient infrastructure to achieve limit and reduce emissions. By visiting www.enviro.aero , passengers and industry insiders alike can understand more about the latest projects underway. It is a valuable resource."
The new website provides more interactivity and audio-visual content, as well as a blog to encourage increased dialogue between industry environmental experts and the public.
