Orbitz to rent more hybrid throughout U.S., big news for responsible business travel

(Orbitz Worldwide) - In a partnership with Fox Rent A Car, an independent rental company specializing in airport rentals of hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles, Orbitz will offer customers access to Fox rentals across all the company’s brands, including Orbitz for Business. Orbitz is one of the first online travel companies to offer hybrids and other fuel-efficient cars.

“Many consumers today are becoming very cost conscious when it comes to travel, and we’re pleased to expand our inventory with suppliers like Fox Rent A Car, which offers discounted rates,” said Steve Praven, VP of Business Development with Orbitz Worldwide. “Additionally, we’re proud to partner with Fox as it shares in our vision to support eco-friendly travel by offering a fleet of hybrid rentals.”

According to a recent survey, high fuel prices is the main catalyst causing 35% of Orbitz customers to rent smaller and more economical vehicles.

Orbitz Worldwide, through its own corporate initiatives and eco-travel microsite is trending toward offsetting more than 12 million pounds of CO2 in partnership with CarbonFund.org in 2008.

Through its Orbitz (hybrids.orbitz.com) and CheapTickets (hybrids.cheaptickets.com) brands, Orbitz Worldwide is among the first online travel companies to offer consumers a hybrid rental search tool to access more than 5,000 fuel efficient vehicles via its supplier partnerships.

Fox Rent A Car features an expansive fleet of hybrid rentals, which continue to grow in demand among online travelers.

Year-over-year, hybrid rentals through Orbitz.com increased 80 percent in July 2008. Additionally, a recent Orbitz study found that 35 percent of those surveyed say they are now renting smaller/more economical vehicles as a result of rising gas prices. Fox Rent A Car, with locations in many of Orbitz Worldwide’s top growing leisure travel destinations, offers a selection of hybrid rentals including Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Toyota Prius and Toyota Highlander SUV.
