The Holiday Inn Cocoa Beach Resort in Florida has begun steps to become one of the first environment-friendly Cocoa Beach hotels. As one of the largest commercial sectors in Florida, the lodging industry has a profound impact on land and natural resource consumption throughout the state, and the Holiday Inn is excited to pave the way for other Florida Space Coast hotels towards a more eco-friendly level of operation.

Central to the initiative, the hotel has become a member of the Green Lodging Program created by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Initiated in 2004, the Green Lodging Program is an effort by the state to recognize and encourage all Florida lodgings that practice reasonable and considerable conservation efforts including waste reduction, environment-friendly purchasing, and pollution prevention.

As an added bonus, hotels and motels adopting the green initiative not only save money and aid in the ongoing health of the environment, they help increase the accommodation prestige of the state as a whole, which can lead to an increase in revenue down the road.

Newly-certified as a Florida Green Lodging hotel, the Holiday Inn Cocoa Beach Resort is beginning a number of projects to reduce overall energy usage and water consumption, to improve indoor air quality and to minimize unnecessary waste. Below is a list of “green” programs currently underway at the popular Florida beach vacation lodging:

Recycling Programs:

  • Ink and Toner Cartridges
  • Compact and GH Fluorescent Lamps
  • Kitchen Grease
  • Recycled Paper products in office and housekeeping
  • White paper and aluminum can recycling

Water Conservation:

  • Linen and towel reuse
  • Chemical reduction from drains
  • Low-flow toilets
  • Low-flow shower heads

Energy Efficiency:

  • Outdoor lighting sensors
  • High-efficiency filters for air conditioning units
  • Electronics with “sleep mode” for low use periods

The hotel welcomes additional suggestions either in their on-site suggestion box or online at their website at http://www.hicocoabeachhotelsite.com.
