The travel and entertainment juggernaut is taking another step toward the “good” kind of green with its new film, “EARTH”, by planting a single tree for every moviegoer who sees the film in its opening week.
Two weeks ago, Disney unveiled plans to reduce emissions, focusing on waste, electricity and fuel use, as well as its impact on water and ecosystems. Now, the travel and entertainment juggernaut is taking another step toward the “good” kind of green with its new film, “EARTH”, by planting a single tree for every moviegoer who sees the film in its opening week.
Disney’s newest film label, Disneynature, is nationally debuting “EARTH”, its premiere film, on April 22nd – better known in these green circles as “Earth Day”. The label is pledging to plant a single tree for every single moviegoer who makes the trip to the cinema during the film’s opening week.
Narrated by James Earl Jones, “EARTH” tells the story of three animal families (elephants, polar bears and humpback whales) and their journeys across the planet. The films is directed by the tremendous creative team behind the Emmy Award-winning series “Planet Earth, Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield.
“The public is looking for films like ‘EARTH’ that are entertaining, educational, show nature’s beauty and are environmentally conscious,” said Jean-François Camilleri, executive vice president and general manger of Disneynature.
The company plans to oversee the planting of the trees in areas conservationists have identified as important “hot spots of biodiversity,” such as the Brazilian Atlantic Forest – considered by experts to be the most endangered rain forest in the world. With only 7 percent of the original forest remaining, Disney is committed to ensuring the trees are planted and cared for to provide the greatest long term benefit for the planet.
Disneynature is the first film label to be introduced by Disney in over 60 years.
