Eco-friendly lesbian travel company, Sweet, is offering eight community service activities for guests on board its upcoming carbon-neutral Western Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Spirit – nicknamed the Sweet Caribbean Cruise – from November 8 through the 15. The voyage will mark the largest -ever carbon-neutral cruise in history.

Two-thousand lesbians will be riding the waves on the high seas while saving the world. Sure, at first glance it does tend to sound a bit like a late-night Cinemax flick. But hey, whatever works, right?

Here is the true skinny: eco-friendly lesbian travel company, Sweet, is offering eight community service activities for guests on board its upcoming carbon-neutral Western Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Spirit – nicknamed the Sweet Caribbean Cruise – from November 8 through the 15.

The cruise departs out of New Orleans and will feature top lesbian comedians, singer-songwriters, lesbian DJs and celebrities. Even better: the cruise will mark the largest -ever carbon-neutral cruise in history – lesbian or straight.

“By offsetting a cruise ship this large, Sweet is taking a huge step towards sustainability that few other cruise lines have before,” says Jason Fitzgerald Carbonfund.org’s Partnership Manager.

“Carbonfund.org is so pleased to partner with Sweet, and we hope other travel companies follow their lead as we all pursue a clean energy future.”

Something for everyone

“When a consumer thinks about giant problems like global warming, poverty and illiteracy, it’s overwhelming. Where do you start?” asks Shannon Wentworth, CEO and co-founder of Sweet. “Sweet aims to break these overwhelming issues into fun, bite-sized chunks. Each of our projects is 3 to 5 hours long, but creates a measurable difference in the community. Incredibly fun, profoundly meaningful. That’s Sweet.”

Guest activities aboard the Sweet Caribbean Cruise include a beach cleanup, a deep-sea reef restoration, a children’s library project, set up of a school’s computer lab, a pediatric ward cheer-up, dune restoration, wetlands restoration and park re-beautification.

“The idea is simple,” says Wentworth, “Solve the world’s problems and have fun while you’re doing it.”

Reaching beyond the lesbian community

Since its inception in January 2008, lesbian travel company Sweet merges the best of lesbian entertainment with social consciousness and environmental awareness. The company has big ambitions to extend go beyond the lesbian community.

“It’s my dream to demonstrate to the rest of the business world that you can do good and create a profitable business,” says Wentworth. “Sweet’s impact is profound, but what if everyone spent 3 to 5 hours of their vacations working on a volunteer project? That’s world changing.”

  1. Isn’t it great when we as a community can do things like that!
But Sweet was not the first, and is not the only Lesbian Travel company to do community service projects.
I was on an Olivia cruise recently that did just that. Women brought tons of donations…suitcases full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, soap, medical supplies, crayons, pencils, pencil sharpeners, notebooks, toys, balls, sports equipment, balloons and the list goes on. Everything was sorted by an ambitious team of “baggers” into cartons of school supplies for the teachers and filled Ziploc bags for the kids. It was awesome!
There were so many supplies…that the ship (Holland America’s ms Westerdam) had to crate most things and have it delivered ashore. Also many women took supplies with them on their excursions and had donation sites and individuals to hand supplies out to.
Not sure on a total count…but it was up in the thousands of items donated. Hats off to all the wonderful women that contributed and dispensed all the donation items to Samana, Dominican Republic, Olivia Caribbean Cruise, November 2008.
