Finding unusual adventure + unprecedented style in the American Southwest: The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain offers an amazing array of unusual desert adventures set amongst Arizona's rich cultural and natural histories.

Nestled in the high Sonoran Desert is an invigorating playground where the adventurous can explore the lush desert along the Tortolitas Mountains and majestic Saguaro forest. Opened December 18, 2009, the 850-acre Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain features a 250-room hotel, Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, destination spa and luxury homes at The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.

The resort also features adventure programming and world class hiking, and is home to the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships each spring in its striking canyon setting. Serving breakfast and dinner daily, the resort’s Core Kitchen and Wine Bar introduces the True American Cuisine of Chef Joel Harrington, with coast-to-coast American favorites presented in a brilliantly-flavorful Sonoran desert context. A stunning restaurant with contemporary design inspired by the vibrant colors of the earth, CORE features six dining venues and an American menu focused on regional sustainable cuisine and local growers. The citrus grove directly adjoining CORE offers the freshest of Arizona oranges, Minneola tangelos and red grapefruit.

At The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, guests can experience the best of the high Sonoran Desert, the Wild West, Native American culture and history, Southwest flora and fauna, and a mystical sense of place, all at the same time, all in the same trip. Add to that the ability to venture into surrounding canyons for hiking, canyoneering, birding, geo-caching, orienteering, rock climbing, desert skills practice and archeological touring, and guests have access to an adventure menu that is unprecedented among contemporary Southwest resorts.

Another claim to fame of The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain’s Adventure Program is its ability to provide experiences not usually available to the public, and to provide a sense not only of place but of natural and cultural stewardship. The looming rock formations surrounding the resort are scribed with ancient petroglyphs — historic rock art etched by “the ones from before” and now protectively watched over by resort staff. Early in the design process, the resort’s construction plans were also significantly adjusted to preserve several key natural features which dot the surrounding landscape and which will remain untouched for the long term.

Hiking

The Tortolita Mountain Park borders The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain to the north, offering offers 3,000 scenic and undisturbed acres and 20 miles of charted hiking surrounded by desert landscapes and wildlife. Steep, rugged canyons, gentle terrain such as Wild Burro Wash, and winding trails of various levels beckon hikers and walkers throughout the year.

Bicycling

The Tucson area has been ranked by Bicycling Magazine as one of the top cycling places in the U.S., with more than 500 miles of bike routes linking 128 nearby city parks. Adding to these riches, the adjoining Coronado National Forest hosts mountain biking and rock climbing as well as skiing the 9,100-foot Mount Lemmon. All are located within minutes of The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.

Desert Ecology

Holding a tarantula, inching up-close-and-personal to a giant snake, trying to outrun a wily roadrunner or learning the secrets of medicinal desert plants are among the many guided desert experiences which the new Ritz-Carlton makes available to its guests, including the younger set. Many fascinating animals call this desert home, including amphibians and reptiles, the iconic Gambel’s Quail, desert cardinals, small mammals, javelina, bobcats, the cactus-roosting Gila Woodpecker, the world’s smallest owls, deer, and the “songster of the desert” – the coyote.

While The Ritz-Carlton itself is situated in on a lush desert floor teeming with wildlife, a short drive up nearby Mount Lemmon also takes travelers through seven different eco-systems from a desert environment to Ponderosa Pine forests typical of Canada.

Astronomy Capital of the World

Southern Arizona enjoys the clearest skies in the U.S.–about 350 nights of viewing a year – and it is not surprisingly home to the world’s most-respected observatories. Resort guests can view the heavens from telescopes as a member of a small observing program or as individuals – joined one-on-one by an experienced astronomer (the current Mars Landing Mission is directed for NASA by the nearby University of Arizona).

Desert Jeep Tours

Open-air four-wheel-drive vehicles ferry resort guests into the Tortolita Preserve to learn about Saguaro, Barrel and Cholla Cacti, about desert “critters”, and about legendary cowboy cattle rancher Eugene “Cush” Cayton, the original homesteader who settled Dove Mountain in 1926. They also learn how the early settlers burned cactus to feed themselves and their cattle, and about similar desert survival skills which have been honed by the indigenous Native American and later ranch cultures.

White Stallion Ranch Adventures

The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain enjoys a rare partnership with Tucson’s acclaimed White Stallion Ranch, offering special access to trail rides, breakfast rides, team cattle penning, mountain rides, afternoons at the Ranch, work activities at the Ranch, family rides, upscale wine rides and even ranch hand rodeo each Saturday night. While these activities are usually only open to travelers staying at the ranch itself, White Stallion officially welcomes guests of The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain for exclusive, à la carte adventures in a true, third-generation working ranch environment.

Environmental Education

Children’s eco-adventures focus on the remarkable natural discoveries to be experienced in the terrain immediately surrounding The Ritz-Carlton. Incorporating a sense of play and natural learning, these kid-friendly educational sessions allow young guests to explore and learn about the plants, animals and history which make the Sonoran Desert so fascinating. Young participants will learn about the life cycle of the Saguaro cactus, visit a thousand-year-old Hohokam Native American occupation site, and see bountiful desert wildlife, some of it unique and rare. Guides will even bring along a critter or two, providing some true hands-on learning about the area’s real-life inhabitants.

Water Adventures

With multiple swimming pools, the resort offers a chance to relax outdoors beneath ancient Hohokam petroglyphs on the boulders above. For the more daring, kids of all ages can ride a 230-foot water slide with a four-story elevation change from a rock ledge down into the cooling waters of the pool below. It is the longest water slide in the area.

Adventure Spa

The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain encourages guests to experience the beauty of the Sonoran desert through its eco-holistic spa treatments and signature Desert Moon Alignment. Desert Moon Alignment encompasses three distinct bodywork experiences inspired by lunar energies and performed under a starlit desert sky, on specific nights selected from the lunar calendar. The spa also offers Mountain Yoga and Mountain Pilates, preceded by a gentle personal hike, all in a serene mountain setting.

World-Class Golf

Resort guests who prefer more manicured adventures need go no farther than The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain. With his first Tucson golf course in 25 years, Jack Nicklaus took advantage of the resort’s high Sonoran Desert setting to integrate strategy, variety and fair shot values into his new Signature Golf Course at Dove Mountain, designing and blending 27 holes among the tall saguaros that stand along the surrounding Tortolitas. The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain was unveiled to a global audience during the 2009 World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship.

National Geographic recently named Tucson one of the “50 Best Places to Live: The Next Generation Adventure Towns.” The outdoor adventure focus of The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain has been designed to complement this recent area rating, with plans for the coming months to include the unveiling of a complete group teambuilding adventure school, archeological exploration program, night hikes and rides, guided fun runs, and adventure summer school for younger guests.

Built to use 40% less energy and 30% less water than a comparable hotel, the AAA Four Diamond, locally-owned Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina, offers a glimpse of the future while celebrating the past.

Proximity Hotel’s green sustainable design and construction follows the guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System,™ the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

Both Proximity Hotel and Print Works Bistro attained the USGBC’s highest rating, LEED Platinum. Proximity features ultra efficient materials and the latest in building technology such as North America’s first installation of the regenerative drive for Otis’ Gen2 elevator, which reduces net energy usage by capturing the system’s energy and feeds it back into the building’s internal electrical grid. In addition, 100 solar panels on the roof generate energy to heat water.

Sustainable practices, custom-designed furnishings, commissioned art and innovative design await guests in every corner of the 147-room luxury hotel and its adjacent restaurant, Print Works Bistro.

While many of the 70+ energy and health enhancements are not outwardly visible to guests, folks are sure to notice the oversized windows providing abundant natural light and great amounts of fresh air in their guestroom.

“How can you tell if the hot water for your shower was heated by yesterday’s sunlight or with natural gas?” says Dennis Quaintance, Chief Design Officer and President of Quaintance-Weaver, the owner of Proximity. “We made sure none of our sustainable practices caused one iota of sacrifice in comfort for our guests.”

Guests also enjoy flavorful food, custom-designed furniture and original artwork in each room. As guests enter the hotel, they encounter interesting architecture and décor including a “floating” front desk made of a striking 12-foot steel cantilever sculpture, a 28-foot long mohair sofa, an interior balcony overlooking the Social Lobby and 22-foot high windows overlooking the Bluebell Garden.

The hotel features 7,000 square feet of private event space, a spacious fitness studio, outdoor swimming pool, and a “guest living room” on each floor. Proximity’s oversized guest rooms and suites have 50 square-foot windows, custom furnishings, high definition television, Magi beds and signature bathrooms.

Proximity’s restaurant, Print Works Bistro, uses fresh, local food in creating both traditional and modern versions of classic European bistro dishes. With three walls of windows overlooking the gardens in the dining room, no seat is far from any one of the 52 seven-foot tall operable windows. In addition to an extensive wine list, Print Works offers a smoke-free bar and plenty of outdoor terrace dining by the restored stream. Sustainable practices there include sensor-controlled ventilation for the kitchen, geothermal energy for the restaurant’s refrigeration equipment and tabletops made of reclaimed walnut.

Built and operated by Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels, the Proximity is just a stone’s throw away from its sister businesses, Lucky 32 Southern Bistro, Green Valley Grill and the Four Diamond O.Henry Hotel in Greensboro. Like the O.Henry, Proximity is “in and of” her community, evidenced by such things as using local architectural influences and local artisans. The hotel and restaurant are named after the Proximity Manufacturing Cotton Mill (1896) and Proximity Print Works Mill (1912), which are central to Greensboro’s rich textile history.

The Seaport Hotel is dedicated to increasing sustainability and conservation throughout all aspects of the organization.

Green Key Rated

Seaport received a 4 out of 5 rating from the Green Key/AAA Eco-Rating Program. Seaport is proud to be one of 3 U.S. hotels to participate in the U.S. pilot program.

Cleaning Green at the Seaport Hotel
Seaport uses cleaning fluids produced by an Electrolyzed water system. This system combines tap water with a saline mix that has both a positive and a negative electrical charge to create a powerful and natural cleaning agent. Cleaning green is a top priority for the Seaport Hotel.

Ozone Laundry System
Seaport recently installed the Ozone System which uses high voltage electricity to split oxygen atoms (O2) into a highly unstable grouping of 3 oxygen atoms called “ozone gas”. This man-made chemical transformation happens in nature, and helps our environmentally friendly hotel by reducing the amount of detergent needed for laundry.

Seaport Yearly Recycle Rate of 44 Percent, 201 Tons of Material
In partnership with Capital Paper, a division of Mass Hauling, the Seaport Hotel recycles white paper, newspaper, plastic, glass, aluminum, and cardboard. Guests are encouraged to use our in-room recycling program.

Renewable Energy Credits
In 2009, Seaport purchased enough renewable energy credits to offset the electricity used to power all 426 of our guest rooms, 13 guest floors and operation of our 4 guest elevators for the entire year.

A very experience-focused hotel, guests are welcomed at check-in with a mini martini and a fresh-baked brownie or chocolate chip cookie! Newly renovated, this property is located in the affluent Southpark neighborhood, just a few minutes south of uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The hotel has 264 guest rooms, an indoor pool, fitness center, Fountain Grille Restaurant, and Lobby Bar.

Guests at the Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark Hotel are all about the experience and discovering new things – including ways to be more environmentally friendly. The hotel is continually in development to find new and better ways to leave a smaller carbon footprint on the environment without impacting the guest experience.

The hotel’s newly renovated fitness center is a shining example of being eco-friendly. The floors throughout the gym are made from recycled rubber tires while the ribbon-patterned artwork, which hangs from floor to ceiling, was made from recycled water bottles. While working out in the fitness center guests can drink complimentary water — which they can pour from pitchers rather than disposable plastic bottles — and snack on organic apples. The swimming pool uses salt rather than chlorinated water.

Meetings at the Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark are also green. The hotel does not use linens on the tables to cut down on water use in the laundry; pitchers of water are placed on the tables unless bottled water is specifically requested; all of the rooms offer natural light to cut down on lighting; the meeting rooms feature energy-efficient lighting; and all meeting rooms are climate- and lighting-controlled by computer so as to not waste energy on vacant spaces. The hotel also offers green menu items for meeting planners who want to serve organic foods that are still reasonably priced.

The environment is also reflected in the hotel’s décor — which features blades of grass in a ribbon pattern on the carpeting, doors, elevators, and throughout the hotel. This design element, as incorporated in the renovation by Charlotte design group LS3P, is in homage to Queen Charlotte of Germany for whom the city of Charlotte (nicknamed the Queen City) is named after. The Queen had a love of botany, hence the grass elements.

The beautiful Sonoran Desert has inspired the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa to reduce its environmental impact in every operational aspect of the resort. The resort aims to preserve and uphold its unique environment for many years to come.

Water-use reduction

Nearly 95% of the property has been left in the original state of the Sonoran desert, including all plant material. The property participates in xeriscaping (low water landscaping) to save this valuable desert resource.

All washes and natural waterways were preserved and kept intact to allow free flow of water sources from the upper desert to lower regions, allowing the water aquifer to be replenished and to preserve the natural highways for desert animals.

In an effort to reduce water use, Starr Pass Golf Club only overseeds fairways and tees of the award-winning Arnold Palmer Signature Golf course during the winter months. By allowing the roughs to go dormant, the resort saves millions of gallons of water each year. All golf course irrigation is reclaimed water. No ground water is used when watering the golf course.

Wildlife & Nature

Starr Pass Golf Course is also an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program member; the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses helps golf courses to enhance wildlife habitats and protect natural resources for the benefit of people, wildlife, and the game of golf. The program is designed to give golf course managers the information and guidance they need to implement stewardship projects and receive recognition for their efforts.

Since its opening in 2005, the resort has donated 330 acres of pristine Sonoran desert to the Tucson Mountain Park for continued maintenance and preservation of the land. The resort sits adjacent to the park, with many on-site trails leading to the Tucson Mountain Park.

In addition to the land donation, Starr Pass and the City of Tucson have created an Environmental Enhancement Fund. This fund allocates a percentage of resort sales, contributing $17 million in 20 years. This fund is used to conduct research on mountain lion populations, build trailheads and erect signage in Tucson Mountain Park, as well as measures to control buffelgrass, a non-native species of plant that increases the threat of fire to our Sonoran Desert.

During the development of the resort property, non-native soil was never brought into the resort during the building process. Even rocks were ground to use as fill dirt to build the resort.

Sustainable dining

The culinary team at Starr Pass has perhaps had the biggest impact on the resort’s eco-friendly program. The Banquet Department and most food outlets have made a commitment to first purchase organic food when available. Led by Executive Chef Chris Brown, the resort has committed to purchasing only humanely treated animals free of any additional hormones or antibiotics, as they are available.

For its produce, the resort works closely with the Agua Linda CSA (community supported agriculture), an organic grower who practices sustainable agriculture free of any GMO (genetically modified organisms) or use of engineered seed crops. Starr Pass owns shares of the farms, with culinary team members often donating their time to help harvest. The resort kitchen also maintains an organic garden outside of Primo Restaurant that is cultivated used in the restaurant for meal functions.

Housekeeping

Starr Pass has implemented a linen reuse program within housekeeping. Bed linens are changed every three days unless otherwise requested by guests, thus reducing water use.

In the convention spaces, recycle bins are now placed in strategic locations to allow guests to recycle newspapers and fine paper used during meetings. Every department participates in a comprehensive paper recycling program. In addition, all newspapers from guestrooms are recycled by housekeeping.

Plastic cups in the lobby have been replaced with “corn cups” which consist almost entirely of corn. The cups break down in composting within 45 days.

Regarded as one of Asia ’s finest green and eco-resorts, Golden Buddha Beach Resort is the only resort located next to a spectacular uninhabited 10km beach and private bay on the island of Koh Phra Thong (Golden Buddha Island).

The area remains one of the last unspoiled coastal areas in Thailand affording guests an experience that is both unique and completely in touch with nature.

The Beach Resort extends for over 10 km along the Andaman Sea, comprising uniquely designed beach houses that comfortably sleep between 2 and 5 people. The tropical island resort has only 25 private beach houses, so crowds are nonexistent while peace, privacy, and tranquility are guaranteed. Both exotic and rare wildlife can often be viewed from the comfort of your own veranda.

The Hornbills, monkeys and deer are all commonly seen near the resort. The resort activities include diving and snorkeling at some of the best locations in Thailand.
