I have heard so many people talking about this that I am sure it comes as no surprise to say that the best way to find jobs in a recession is to investigate jobs on employer websites:

-employers do not use recruiters in recessions because they cost money
-job boards are flooded with applicants

People just do not look for jobs on employer websites. There are thousands of employer websites in most cities and many of the job sit on there for months without applications.

This is where most of the jobs are and I found this far more effective than other means.

I started using a research jobs site called Hound that I do not think anyone knows about because it is run by a small company that does not advertise.

All Hound.com does is show you unadvertised job openings that are not publicly advertised and are located on employer websites.

Very few people realize that most employers post their job on their own sites and not on job boards like Monster, CareerBuilder, etc. because these sites charge employers up to $500 to post a single job. In my experience (I am getting more interviews that I ever have), your chances of getting interviews and hired are much better when you are applying to jobs that are not advertised that no one knows about.

I have gotten a ton of interviews through the Hound site. If you are looking for a job I would highly recommend using Hound . What most people do not realize is that most jobs are found on employer websites and not job boards. Hound puts all of the jobs it finds from employer websiste (every Fortune 500, Inc. 500 and other company it can locate) on its site.

When you start seeing sites advertise themselves a lot that should be a warning sign of sorts because that means that lots of people will start going and applying to the jobs. I really trust Hound because it does not advertise.

I think more resorts are going to implement a similar program sooner rather than later. Most customers will demand that they do simply out of principle.

I think that the ideas stated about the concept of responsible travel are wonderful.

I personally however object to "western" or materialist communities, referring to communities with less material goods or a different culture as "developing communities"

Is not the use of that term, a sign of you forcing your western-view on communities that may be more developed but less western than yours? Does it not refer to the idea that all cultures will develop into a mirror of your communities, which you consider as developed, in spite of the break down in family structure, increased family violence, puppy mills, drug problems and crime rates that are unbelievable.

Maybe we all should travel with the intent to see what other have to teach us and what we can learn. Rather than starting with the mind set we are "more developed" and probably smarter than where we are heading.

I do commend the author on going past green and trying to think of cultural awareness of the local people and ways of life but we all must try to think out of the box to learn from each other. Responsible Travel is being used by many as a way to sell the same old tours to a new bunch of travelers but it can and should be so much more.

The next president of the United States has inspired millions of Americans to reflect upon themselves, their nation, and their relationship to the world. He has lifted us from a place of pessimism, cynicism, hopelessness, and helplessness, showing us that it is indeed possible once again for the forces of good to prevail. He makes us want to be a part of those forces–to be better citizens, to make sacrifices, to roll up our sleeves and do the work that needs to be done. The election of Barack Obama to the presidency showed something that so many Americans believed was a long abandoned concept: that grace, compassion, and wisdom can still prevail over fear, manipulation, and intimidation. It means different things to different people, but collectively, our next president has inspired us, as a nation, to strive, day in and day out, to be the better part of ourselves. If he believes in us, why should we not believe in ourselves?

I use the 80/20 rule for going green. Do what I can 80% of the time and forget the expensive, complicated stuff. Economists call it the Law of Diminishing Return. Who wouldn't want to be green, it's human to want clean air, healthy buildings and nourishing food.

We witnessed a very crazy day for the stock market yesterday. The DOW plunged 800 points only to come roaring back to close down 370 points. It was breathtaking for many of us because we were glued to our TV (and computer screen) as the stock market kept on going down but for some of us, it didn’t really matter because our focus was on other things.
Yesterday, I was extremely busy at work. I was so busy that I didn’t have time to check on Yahoo Finance nor did I have time to talk to my coworkers about the stock market. When I finally sat down and looked at how the market was doing, I saw the headline (DOW plunged 800 points and closed at 370) on the homepage. My net worth probably plunged just like any other 350 point down days, but it didn’t matter as much to me.
I wasn’t emotionally upset this time because I wasn’t “living” the roller coaster. As a result, it hurt my wallet but didn’t hurt my feelings. I felt much better and saved myself from much of the emotions of a down day just by focusing on other parts of my life. I wasn’t thinking about the stock market nor was I worrying about the Cisco (CSCO) shares that I owned.
I was living my life and not being controlled by the stocks I own. I felt good. In this type of market, maybe you should try it too.
How did you spend your day yesterday? Did you even know that the stock market plunged? Can you sleep at night these days? If you aren’t worried at all, reply and show some encouragement to those that couldn’t!

You can now follow me on twitter! Alternatively, subscribe to my RSS feed or get blog posts through email if you enjoyed this post. You might even win a prize or two by doing so!

Whole Travel looks like a site you might want to use to get some ideas for your next vacation. "Blue Sky" it with themes like biking, or hiking, or whale watching. You might find some hidden eco-gems for your next vacation.

But if you're like a most people, vacation travel is a small portion of your travel. Finding a "Green" hotel for business or personal travel is equally important.

http://www.iStayGreen.org is a site that has thousands of lodging properties that have been Green Eco-Leaf Rated. It's also a social networking site with aspects that are similar to Facebook - TripAdvisor - and Expedia but all wrapped up into one website for the eco-friendly traveler. Members can write reviews on the properties they stay at based on their "Green" initiatives, so basically the public is creating an accountability system that forces the property owners to be truthful in their claims and do something about becoming more environmentally friendly.

While you can't do "Blue Sky" searches at iStayGreen.org yet, it is easy to use for finding rated "Green" lodging plus you get eco-reviews and the social networking side too.

This is great news, and I hope more hotel and resort chains follow. With all the traveling I have to do for business, it is hard to be green often. But if the hotels help - not changing the towels every day, recycling, using eco-friendly products I will definitely stay with them over a hotel that does not. I want to do my part and this helps.

Bill McKibben's new book has been generating buzz in the environmental community. “American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau” was released on Earth Day 2008 and was edited by renowned author and movement organizer Bill McKibben and with a forward by Al Gore.

The first attempt to bring together in one place all the essential writings for the American environmental movement, American Earth is being called the “environmentalist’s bible.” It has started to gain mainstream accolades from the likes of U.S. News & World Report and The Boston Globe, which called it “the best resource between two covers” for anyone seeking to understand the “historical and intellectual roots of today's environmental movement.”

The book has already been adopted into university curricula around the country, and environmental action groups like Earthjustice and the National Resources Defense Council have pegged this anthology of environmental literature a must-read.

At a time when being “green” is all the rage, this book is a great resource for anyone wanting a better foundation upon which to understand global climate change and other important environmental issues that have finally caught the attention of policymakers and leaders worldwide.

Check out the book’s website at www.americanearth.org for more information. It’s worth a look!

This is a great article! At Carolina Mornings (Asheville cabin and vacation rentals) we offer the same sorts of vacation opportunities, since we are also in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our Mountain Discovery Pass provides every reservation with a free ticket each day of the stay to local whitewater rafting, historic trolley tours, Lake Lure boat tours, and golfing. Plus, all our properties are with an hour of Asheville where tons of opportunities for fun exist. We also have rentals with hiking right on the property, or tucked away retreats for those who want a secluded mountain getaway. www.carolinamornings.com - for those who want to know more :)
