The beautiful Sonoran Desert has inspired the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa to reduce its environmental impact in every operational aspect of the resort. The resort aims to preserve and uphold its unique environment for many years to come.

Water-use reduction

Nearly 95% of the property has been left in the original state of the Sonoran desert, including all plant material. The property participates in xeriscaping (low water landscaping) to save this valuable desert resource.

All washes and natural waterways were preserved and kept intact to allow free flow of water sources from the upper desert to lower regions, allowing the water aquifer to be replenished and to preserve the natural highways for desert animals.

In an effort to reduce water use, Starr Pass Golf Club only overseeds fairways and tees of the award-winning Arnold Palmer Signature Golf course during the winter months. By allowing the roughs to go dormant, the resort saves millions of gallons of water each year. All golf course irrigation is reclaimed water. No ground water is used when watering the golf course.

Wildlife & Nature

Starr Pass Golf Course is also an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program member; the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses helps golf courses to enhance wildlife habitats and protect natural resources for the benefit of people, wildlife, and the game of golf. The program is designed to give golf course managers the information and guidance they need to implement stewardship projects and receive recognition for their efforts.

Since its opening in 2005, the resort has donated 330 acres of pristine Sonoran desert to the Tucson Mountain Park for continued maintenance and preservation of the land. The resort sits adjacent to the park, with many on-site trails leading to the Tucson Mountain Park.

In addition to the land donation, Starr Pass and the City of Tucson have created an Environmental Enhancement Fund. This fund allocates a percentage of resort sales, contributing $17 million in 20 years. This fund is used to conduct research on mountain lion populations, build trailheads and erect signage in Tucson Mountain Park, as well as measures to control buffelgrass, a non-native species of plant that increases the threat of fire to our Sonoran Desert.

During the development of the resort property, non-native soil was never brought into the resort during the building process. Even rocks were ground to use as fill dirt to build the resort.

Sustainable dining

The culinary team at Starr Pass has perhaps had the biggest impact on the resort’s eco-friendly program. The Banquet Department and most food outlets have made a commitment to first purchase organic food when available. Led by Executive Chef Chris Brown, the resort has committed to purchasing only humanely treated animals free of any additional hormones or antibiotics, as they are available.

For its produce, the resort works closely with the Agua Linda CSA (community supported agriculture), an organic grower who practices sustainable agriculture free of any GMO (genetically modified organisms) or use of engineered seed crops. Starr Pass owns shares of the farms, with culinary team members often donating their time to help harvest. The resort kitchen also maintains an organic garden outside of Primo Restaurant that is cultivated used in the restaurant for meal functions.

Housekeeping

Starr Pass has implemented a linen reuse program within housekeeping. Bed linens are changed every three days unless otherwise requested by guests, thus reducing water use.

In the convention spaces, recycle bins are now placed in strategic locations to allow guests to recycle newspapers and fine paper used during meetings. Every department participates in a comprehensive paper recycling program. In addition, all newspapers from guestrooms are recycled by housekeeping.

Plastic cups in the lobby have been replaced with “corn cups” which consist almost entirely of corn. The cups break down in composting within 45 days.

Hyped as the world's first interactive environmental hybrid theme park and museum, Environmentaland is situated in Los Angeles at the Hollywood & Highland complex.

Hyped as the world’s first interactive environmental hybrid theme park and museum, Environmentaland is a project of Global Inheritance and FUEL TV. Situated in Los Angeles at the Hollywood & Highland complex, the theme park will be open daily through October 21 to play host to special events and feature various exhibits.

Environmentaland has already been featured on CNN International’s “Eco-Solutions” and E! Entertainment’s “That Morning Show”.

“FUEL TV is excited to be supporting Environmentaland,” said CJ Olivares, FUEL TV General Manager. “FUEL TV has worked with Eric Ritz and Global Inheritance on several different projects in the past and ENVIRONMENTALAND is one of the most exciting yet. It engages and educates the audience in a way that maximizes the impact of the environmental lessons it teaches. We’re excited to have people check out the project and learn something from it.”

“Playing” the part

Upon arriving at Environmentaland, visitors receive a program with a scorecard. While strolling through the many museum exhibits, visitors collect points on their cards that are then redeemed for cool items from the likes of FUEL TV, CamelBak, Loomstate, Interscope Records, Paramount, Goldenvoice, Focus Features and more.

Starting this weekend, individuals with the highest score for the day will win a 3-day festival pass to one of the major music festivals in the U.S. (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, etc).

Inside the park, visitors can play desert mini golf, participate in a recycled paper plane toss, test their taste buds in an organic challenge, tour the eco-planetarium, generate power in the energy playground featuring the energy seesaw and more.

Environmentaland will be highlighted by the Public Displays of Affection(PDA) Concert Series, promoting public and group transportation by offering entrance by presenting a metro or bus ticket as proof the attendee used public transportation to arrive to the event. Previous PDA performers include Ladytron and The Secret Machines. Look for details on the next event to take place this October.

Three Marriott Vacation Club resorts, Marriott's Grande Vista, Cypress Harbour and Crystal Shores on Marco Island, have each been awarded with Florida's Green Lodging designation, making it easier for travelers to enjoy an environmentally-friendly getaway to the orange capital of the nation.

Three Marriott Vacation Club resorts have been awarded with Florida’s Green Lodging designation, making it easier for travelers to enjoy an environmentally-friendly getaway to the orange capital of the nation.

The three awarded resorts (first in Marriott’s Vacation Club to receive Florida Green Lodging Program designation) are Marriott’s Grande Vista, Cypress Harbour and Crystal Shores on Marco Island.

“Now, more than ever, environmental stewardship is a critical part of delivering unforgettable vacation experiences to our Owners and guests and vital to the future of travel and tourism,” said Troy Asche, regional vice president of operations for the Florida-Caribbean region of Marriott Vacation Club. “By taking strategic steps to ‘green’ our resort operations, our collective efforts can make a huge impact on preserving our beautiful Florida environment.”

Known widely for its commitment to quality, Marriott Vacation Club has been a worldwide leader in vacation ownership for 25 years, with over 11,000 timeshare resort villas throughout the U.S., Caribbean, Europe and Asia. The club takes this leadership to the next level by demonstrating how responsible development and resort management can be a positive force for the environment.

Just last year, Marriott Vacation Club International launched the MVCI Green Initiative at its corporate headquarters with continued roll-out to its corporate offices and resorts worldwide, eliminating nearly 254,000 pieces of Styrofoam and plastic waste from landfills annually. As a continuation of these efforts, all 11 Marriott Vacation Club resorts in Florida are currently in process to receive the “One Palm” designation from the Florida Green Lodging Program with expectations to have nearly all resorts designated by the end of the year.

The states DEP-run Green Lodging Program provides the lodging industry with free technical assistance, encouraging hotels and resorts to adopt cost-saving “green” practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources.

To become a designated member of the Florida Green Lodging Program, resorts must implement a variety of green practices. These practices include, but are not limited to, water conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling.

“It is wonderful to see businesses implement green practices such as water conservation, recycling and energy reduction because they are not only good for business, they are good for Florida’s environment,” said Deas Bohn, DEP Sustainable Initiatives director.

Marriott Grande Vista

Originally opened in 1997, Marriott’s Grande Vista sits on 164 acres in the heart of Orlando. The resort’s 900 one, two and three-bedroom villas boast various natural amenities, including hiking trails surrounded by native flora and wetlands.

For the golf lover, the Faldo Golf Institute and the neighboring Grande Pines Golf Club are each members of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.

Marriott’s Cypress Harbour

Marriott’s Cypress Harbour offers guests a peaceful retreat surrounded by tall pine, oak and palm trees, only a mile from SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica and Discovery Cove. Originally opened in 1990, guests have full access to the resort’s nature walks, barbeque and picnic areas, and other outdoor activities including bicycling and paddle boat rentals.

Marriott’s Crystal Shores on Marco Island

As the club’s newest addition, the 219 two-bedroom villas Marriott’s Crystal Shores on Marco Island opened its doors in March 2009 to boast the latest in architectural design both inside and out while integrating and enhancing the surrounding natural environment.

After ten years in the making, Destination Hotels & Resorts has officially debuted its newest property: the breathtaking and eco-friendly Pacific-oceanfront Terranea Resort.

After ten years in the making, Destination Hotels & Resorts has officially debuted its newest property: the breathtaking and eco-friendly Pacific-oceanfront Terranea Resort.

Located in Rancho Palos Verdes, just 20 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport, the 120-acre property introduces a whole new generation to a part of Los Angeles that feels worlds away from the dynamic city, and to a beautiful and tranquil setting which is largely unknown.

“Visitors that round the last scenic coastal bend before Terranea are met with a breathtaking sight: an oceanfront Resort surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean with Catalina Island looming across the channel,” said Charlie Peck, president and chief operation officer for Destination. “This location has to be one of Southern California’s most striking vistas and we are honored to add this inspired Resort along the Pacific to our collection of properties.”

Building green luxury

Last year, as well as just a few months back, Destination had already begun the marketing push for the newest addition to their line of resorts. Now, with its doors finally open, the 360-room hotel and luxury villas can show-off their environmental commitment; the resort wass developed with strict eco-sensitivity across all aspects of its building and operations.

During the building process, 45 stately trees on the site that date back over 50 years were carefully boxed prior to construction, then replanted. Also, 14 acres of natural Coastal Sage Scrub habitat was planted by Terranea, re-creating the natural California coastal terrain.

Progressive water quality systems were installed throughout the property to treat and clean rain water runoff and help protect the ocean, including strategically planted areas that serve as “organic filters.”

“Visitors will learn through our example that developments can provide access to irreplaceable land while safeguarding their beauty and nurturing the flora and fauna – all for the benefit of generations to come,” said Terri A. Haack, executive vice president and managing director of Terranea. “It is part of our vision that people will come away from Terranea compelled to become caretakers with us of the land and the ocean that make Southern California one of the world’s most desirable locales.”

Being no stranger to eco-lodging incentives, Destination Hotels & Resorts consistently works to protect and preserve the unique communities in which the company operates through its Destination Earth program; an environmental sustainability program in 2008.

The company is consistently rated one of the top 10 independent hospitality management companies in the United States with more than 30 luxury and upscale hotels, resorts and conference centers. To protect and preserve the unique communities in which the company operates, Destination launched Destination Earth, an environmental sustainability program.

The property also features The Links at Terranea, a challenging 9-hole par 3 golf course, and The Spa at Terranea with 25 treatment rooms, three ocean view pools and a collection of eight distinctive restaurants, bars and lounges.

Guests will recognize the views from many vantage points as the property has been the location of dozens of Hollywood films and television shows over the years. The Resort’s expansive outdoor lawns, terraces, gardens, gazebos and event space are all designed to showcase the Pacific Ocean locale.

“Terranea is secluded and private, providing an oceanfront escape that feels far removed from hectic city life, yet is close for millions. Guests and owners will feel like they’ve been transported to a tranquil place that embodies the classic California lifestyle. The Terranea staff offers gracious, humble service – providing the kind of attentive service one associates with retreating to a safe, familiar, nurturing environment,” said Terri A. Haack, executive vice president and managing director of the new Resort.

Other amenities include a children’s center with interactive programs and several miles of scenic bluff-top trails that connect miles of off-property coastal trails.

The Novotel Phan Thiet Ocean Dune & Golf Resort has been Green Globe certified for its commitment to high eco-standards, including pollution, evergy and water controls.

Novotel Phan Thiet Ocean Dunes & Golf Resort is the first Novotel resort in Vietnam to have achieved the prestigious Green Globe Certified status. The world-renowned distinction recognizes the hotel’s commitment to operating at the world’s highest environmental standards.

Novotel Ocean Dunes & Golf Resort chose to demonstrate their commitment to the environment by undertaking certification – the highest level of the Green Globe program. The hotel was assessed according to eight performance criteria that will guarantee, among other things, better waste management, less pollution, and energy and water consumption control. After an initial benchmarking phase, the Novotel Phan Thiet Ocean Dunes&Golf Resort was audited in order to obtain Green Globe certification and will undergo the same process annually in order to guarantee that the criteria are maintained.

The successful completion of the certification process demonstrates strong commitment to the principles of environmental sustainability.

Staff at all levels were involved in the process, starting from an awareness session at the start of the project, which focused on sustainable development, the hotel’s commitment, and the criteria that needed to be met. They were encouraged to extend their awareness to family members, friends, and the local community. Each department head was then given an opportunity to propose an improvement plan for their operations and the implementation was carried out by all staff.

“We are very pleased and proud to be the first Novotel resort in Vietnam to be Green Globe certified,” says Jon Bourbaud, general manager of Novotel Phan Thiet Ocean Dunes & Golf Resort. “It is a tremendous achievement for the hotel and our staff. We have shown our commitment by putting a great deal of effort into being monitored and becoming compliant to international standards. It is now visual and tangible. More importantly, it has provoked a sense of environmental responsibility among all our staff and people in the community. I am very proud of each and every single staff member who helped make it happen.”

“We have set a new standard for resorts in Vietnam, given the fact that having an option to choose a hotel or vacation destination with minimal environmental impact and offsetting programs is increasingly becoming important. Quite simply, people are becoming more aware of the impact we have on the Earth and our responsibility to change past behavior, while at the same time, the service quality has to remain well maintained.”

The hotel plans to utilize the certification to promote their hotel as a responsible hotel in order to make a stance with regards to sustainable development, as well as to raise awareness towards the environment in the tourism sector among hotel guests and the local community, especially in Phan Thiet where tourism plays such a vital role in economic growth.

Nine young protesters from the climate action group Plane Stupid have caused a shut down of Scotland's Aberdeen Airport in protest of a controversial new golf course by Donald Trump.

Nine young protesters from the climate action group Plane Stupid have caused a shut down of Scotland’s Aberdeen Airport by setting up a golf course on the taxiway, surrounding themselves with fortified security fencing, while another group are occupying the roof of the terminal building and have unfurled a banner reading, “Nae Trump Games with Climate Change”. The group is protesting the controversial new golf course by Donald Trump.

The group intends to maintain its blockade for as long as possible to prevent the release of thousands of tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

The activists entered the runway by cutting the fence and scaled the roof climbing ladders. Dressed as Donald Trump, sporting wigs and golfing attire, with crazy golf clubs and balls, the group are ‘putting’ on the tarmac. The banner on the fencing erected by the group reads “Plane Stupid Scotland Golf Open 2009”.

Donald Trump is supporting the expansion of Aberdeen airport, due mainly to his company’s plans for a new golf course; a new development consisting of 2,000 acres of over 1,000 homes and vacation rentals, a 450-bedroom hotel and two golf courses.

“We have been failed by the generation of Donald Trump and Alex Salmond,” says one of the activists on the taxiway, Jonny Agnew, 22, from Edinburgh. “Despite a catalog of scientific reports warning them that they can’t keep on with aviation growth – even if that hinders their ability to jet in for a weekend of golf – they continue with disregard for all of us, who will end up dealing with the impacts of the climate crisis. The reality is that our generation’s future is vanishing so that people like Donald Trump and his super-rich friends can jet into Aberdeen for a round of golf. The expansion of this airport just cannot go ahead.”

Another Plane Stupid activisit, 24 year old Tilly Gifford from Glasgow, said: “Alex Salmond wants to let the Spanish shareholders of BAA, Donald Trump and his super-rich American friends concrete over Scotland and its efforts to stop runaway climate change. Arctic ice is melting, the sea is already rising and experts warn the world’s rainforests could collapse. Our generation is already starting to feel these impacts as the warming kicks in so it’s obvious that it’s going to need to be us that urgently puts the brakes on expanding unnecessary airports.”

The campaigners chose to close Aberdeen after the Scottish government gave its backing to the expansion of capacity at the airport by 1.5 million passengers by 2015. Aviation is Britain’s fastest growing source of emissions, already amounting to at least 13% of the UK’s climate emissions.

With plans in the Scottish government’s ‘National Planning Framework’ for growth at Scottish airports including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen – as well as Heathrow and Stansted – experts from the Tyndall Centre for climate research say aviation policy alone will scupper any chance the UK has of hitting its climate targets.

“We’re here to say it cannot happen, and our generation won’t let it happen,” says 25 year old Dan Glass, a community worker from Glasgow. “The scientists tell us we’ve got seven years to make emissions peak then drop, and if we fail, the people on this runway and their entire generation, and our children, willl live with the consequences. That’s why we’re doing this.”

The Inn at Loreto Bay has achieved Green Globe's Bronze status by implementing an integrated environmental and social policy, committing itself to benchmarking its energy and water consumption, total waste production and community involvement.

The Inn at Loreto Bay, a 155-room resort located in Loreto, Baja Sur, Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez, has earned bronze status under the prestigious and globally recognized benchmarking program, Green Globe.

Administered by international environmental advisory group EC3 Global, the Green Globe program recognizes the Inn at Loreto Bay’s commitment to operating at the world’s highest environmental standards. To achieve bronze status, the Inn has implemented an integrated environmental and social policy and is committed to benchmarking its energy and water consumption, total waste production and community involvement.

During the certification process, the Inn at Loreto Bay earned “best practice” results in the following areas: energy consumption, water saving, waste diverted from landfill, waste recycling, community contributions, paper products, cleaning products and pesticides. These measures will ensure efficient practices and large cost savings, guaranteeing that the Inn at Loreto Bay is on the path to securing a sustainable future for the environment. To learn more about the resort’s Green Globe Initiatives in Loreto Bay, Mexico (http://www.discoverloretobay.com/hotel/green.php) simply visit its website.

The other efforts of the Inn’s environmentally-friendly practices, such as ecological body care products in refillable containers, compact fluorescent lighting, a high density compactor for recycling and native drought-tolerant landscaping, may be inadvertently overlooked by resort guests, but many offerings, including electric shuttles and organic and heirloom food menu offerings, are certainly hard to miss.

“Guests of the Inn can learn about all of the resort’s policies and practices on an in-room television channel devoted solely to sustainability and environmental awareness,” said General Manager Alfredo Rosas. “We also educate our visitors through ecology brochures in the hotel lobby; during the trailers of our weekly, complimentary movies; and, of course, first-hand from our friendly staff and concierge.”

To learn more about the resort’s partnership with local eco-tourism partners you can visit its all encompassing website www.DiscoverLoretoBay.com. Activities include whale and turtle watching, mule trekking to visit ancient cave paintings, island hiking, tours to see medicinal desert plants and, of course, traditional favorites like sailing, kayaking, snorkeling and diving. During their stay, guests may also choose to volunteer at Animalandia, a local animal clinic, or at one of three local schools where the Inn has established organic vegetable gardens and “edible classroom” programs.

“The resort is founded on the conviction that improving local social and ecological resources will end up increasing the economic viability of the development,” continued Rosas. “Attaining Green Globe’s bronze status is only the first step to fulfilling that vision. We look forward to achieving higher Green Globe performance in the years ahead.”

Local activists are outraged at the Scottish government's acceptance of "The Donald's" latest luxury-venture on a windswept stretch of the Aberdeenshire coastline. Environmentalist groups are currently drawing up proposals citing "vanadalism" of the natural habitat.

Construction of the new development consists of 2,000 acres of over 1,000 homes and vacation rentals, a 450-bedroom hotel and two golf courses. Optimistically, Trump hopes to open the new location by Spring 2011, hoping to immediately create 6,000 jobs, including 1,400 permanent positions.

Martin Ford, the former chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s planning committee, is opposed to the project.

“A billionaire’s vanity project has been put ahead of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There will be widespread suspicion that nobody else would get this permission, because it breaches so many sound principles of good planning.”

“The decision to build a golf course on an SSSI amounts to wanton vandalism. It is gratuitous, because at the inquiry it was demonstrated that it was possible to accommodate the golf course on the estate without using the SSSI,” continued Ford.

The project also faces opposition from two powerful lobbying organizations, the RSPB and the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

“The crazy thing is that there could easily have been both golf and environmental protection at Menie,” said Jonny Hughes, head of policy at the Scottish Wildlife Trust. “Instead, government ministers have failed to deliver the sustainable part of their professed central purpose of ‘sustainable economic growth’. “This decision will mean needless destruction to a unique and nationally important site.”

“The RSPB commissioned a golf course architect to design a layout that incorporated the SSSI within the development. However, Mr Trump ignored this advice,” said Aedan Smith, head of planning and development at RSPB Scotland.

“It appears that the desires of one high-profile overseas developer, who refused to compromise one inch, have been allowed to override the legal protection of this important site, and we fear this sets a precedent which will undermine the whole protected sites network in Scotland.”
Alex Salmond, the First Minister, is in full support of the project, stating: “In tough economic times, substantial investment of this kind is at a premium…

It is entirely right and proper that the resources of the country are harnessed to boost one of our great industries – and tourism is a great Scottish industry.”

Debuting in June 2009, the new eco-friendly Terranea Resort in Southern California, by Destination Hotels & Resorts, will act on its commitment to environmentally sustainable practices and energy conservation efforts, as well as fine organic dining.

(PRWEB) – Destination Hotels & Resorts’ Terranea Resort in Southern California is being created with the utmost sensitivity to its native environment and a guiding philosophy of ecological sustainability. Opening its doors in June 2009, the resort plans to bring its eco-friendly orientation into all aspects of its operations, including dining options with an emphasis on local and organic foods.

Terranea is an eco-friendly California resort committed to protecting the valuable coastal resources that define the Palos Verdes peninsula and make Terranea one of the most valued natural locations in the world.

The existing contours of the land and varied microclimates create diverse natural habitats and every effort has been made to blend the ecological and aesthetic characteristics of the surrounding landscape into the resort. No land mass is being removed from the area during the development of Terranea, and 40% of the materials from abandoned structures left behind by previous tenants are being recycled and used in site preparation of the new resort, and 65,000 tons of onsite rock was crushed to utilize under roads and walkways.

Terranea Resort’s sustainable environmental practices call for measures to protect open space, improve wildlife habitat and treat storm water. To protect and enhance local water quality, Terranea is implementing a series of environmental best management practices that include wet ponds, Bioswales and storm filters.

Terranea offers over 631,800 square feet of native habitat areas. One of the defining characteristics of the Palos Verdes Peninsula is the striking contrast between the texture of the native plants found on the hillsides and refined planting palette of the homes that abut these places. Together, the plants create a variety of intimate and social spaces that transition seamlessly from the interior to the exterior of the space

This sustainable California resort’s water quality management goals are to protect and enhance local water quality by reducing storm water pollutants to limit storm water flows and to conserve the natural areas of the site. Terranea’s pools will be treated with salt water in lieu of a fully chlorinated system. This process is both environmentally friendly and healthier for pool users.

Onsite stone has been quarried to use for stone veneer on the resort’s walls within the landscape. The Boral Clay Pavers made from two of the most abundant natural materials on the planet, clay and shale, will be used throughout the site. They will be sand set to allow for the infiltration of water into the ground. This improves local water quality and further reduces impervious surface paving throughout the project.

Fine Organic Dining
The fine dining restaurants at the eco-friendly Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes feature organic cuisine and contemporary food and beverage concepts.

Leading the culinary efforts is Blau & Associates, a highly successful restaurant consulting firm with a client list that includes top hospitality establishments across the globe. Founded in 2002, Blau & Associates is a strategic restaurant planning and development company that specializes in providing clients with the fresh, creative and sound business advice required to create exceptional food-and-beverage concepts.

Company founder Elizabeth Blau’s impressive foodservice career spans more than 23 years. During that time, Blau has and continues to blaze a culinary trail that most restaurant professionals only dream about. Based in Las Vegas, Blau is particularly well-known for helping to establish her home city as one of the country’s finest culinary destinations.

“Adding Elizabeth Blau and her team to Terranea’s pre-opening group is further proof that the resort will be offering up the finest amenities, service and facilities along the California coast – as well as some of the most intriguing cuisine,” stated Terri A. Haack, Executive Vice President and Managing Director.

Catering to an international palate, Terranea’s exceptional organic, fine dining restaurant venues combine the stunning ocean front locations with truly unique and contemporary offerings. The wide array of eco-friendly dining options include an intimate, free-standing restaurant with sweeping views of the coastline, an all-day dining room overlooking the main pool and terrace, and a casual dining and bar option on the edge of the outer most point of the property, boasting the resort’s most idyllic location for enjoying sunsets and whale watching while basking in the warmth of outdoor fireplaces. Lighter fare is available at a coffee boutique, the spa and pool areas. All of the resort’s organic restaurants in Palos Verdes feature indoor and outdoor seating.

Other eco-friendly resort practices implemented throughout Terranea include:

Embrace the ultimate goal of zero-waste

In year 1-3, attain at least 70% of waste not going to landfill

Recycling program that includes paper, glass, plastic, metals and organic waste

Adopt FLOSS philosophy for food: Fresh, Local, Organic, Seasonal, Sustainable

Purchase bio-degradable room amenity containers

Provide organic dry cleaning services

Create uniforms made of bamboo cotton or chemical free organic cotton, wool or hemp

Purchase from “green” vendors and suppliers

Utilize certified “green” cleaning products

Utilize earth-friendly paper and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper

Energy efficiency program

High-impact fluorescent light bulbs

Water conservation program

Utilize natural daylight

Embrace DH&R Corporate Destination Earth initiatives

(PRWEB) Acapulco is perhaps the most famous Mexican resort along the Pacific coast. Just slightly east, however, the Bahias de Huatulco (wah-TOOL-ko) – Bays of Huatulco – seem to have slipped under the radar screen for many years. Along a 22-mile stretch of coastline sit nine bays – only three of which have been developed. Tangolunda Bay will soon be home to Encanto Villas & Residence Club – a private residence club with spectacular beachfront views of the Pacific Ocean.

Cincinnati developer Jeff Anderson of Jeffrey R. Anderson Real Estate, Inc. says what attracted him to this area was the local interest in preserving the environment. “Besides the obvious beauty and charm of Huatulco, I was impressed that it is the only resort community in Mexico to obtain Green Globe 21 certification,” Anderson explains. In fact, 70 percent of Huatulco’s land has been set aside as a protected ecological zone, and there’s even a “national park marine zone” along the coast, where sea life is abundant. “It only takes a short time to get to know the locals because of their openness and gracious hospitality,” Anderson adds. “The people of Huatulco are dedicated to preserving their environment, history and culture, while also welcoming tourists to discover their rich natural resources and contribute to the economy.”

With the most extensive coral reef system in Pacific Mexico, Huatulco’s beaches offer snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, boating, or good old-fashioned relaxation. The nearby Sierra Madre Mountains lure adventurers with whitewater rafting, kayaking, and waterfall-laden jungle tours. Now families can own an exclusive slice of this paradise without the hassle and risk associated with the purchase and upkeep of traditional second homes. Pricing begins at $150,000 for a one-tenth deeded interest in a spacious, fully furnished three-bedroom residence. Three-bedroom penthouses start at $190,000. Amenities include a private beach club, multiple pools, a fine dining restaurant, boat dock, fitness center and spa, and a club concierge.

“We decided a private residence club made the most sense for this unique piece of land along Tangolunda Bay,” Jeff Anderson says. “This is the last oceanfront property on the bay to be constructed, and we’re only developing the minimum amount necessary to create an intimate resort experience. Residence club owners purchase a fraction of a home, and they typically visit often. While we’re keeping the overall density low, owners will keep the tourism dollars flowing to help sustain Huatulco’s economy.”

Anderson has also decided to donate up to $1 million in net profits to Waterkeeper® Alliance. The non-profit, chaired by Bobby Kennedy, Jr., is dedicated to preserving and protecting waterways around the world. Donations from Encanto Villas & Residence Club will be directed toward supporting global water quality protection and the five Waterkeeper programs located throughout Mexico.

The residence club concept is growing in popularity as Americans discover the flexible and carefree lifestyle this type of vacation home offers. Industry consulting firm Ragatz Associates reports that luxury, shared ownership sales volume in 2007 was $2.3 billion, representing an 8.3 percent growth over 2006.

Anderson Real Estate has teamed with DCP International, which pioneered the Equity Residence ClubSM concept in 1992 with the Deer Valley Club at Utah’s prestigious Deer Valley Resort.

DCP Principal Steve Dering says, “Residence clubs are a sensible way to own in any market, but especially now. Members own deeded real estate in a prime location and prices reflect today’s economy. Not only is the purchase price commensurate with the amount of use, but the insurance, taxes, utilities, maintenance, replacement reserves and staff expenses are shared amongst owners. The club is operated for the benefit and exclusive use of its owners, similar to an equity golf country club.”

Encanto Villas & Residence Club is expected to open in winter of 2009. Currently, visitors can fly direct to Huatulco from Houston and Mexico City. Direct flights from Monterrey, Mexico are starting soon.

Encanto Villas & Residence Club Amenities and Services: 24 beautifully furnished three-bedroom residences & penthouses (Phase I), on-site concierge service, a private beach club, fitness center and spa, multiple pools, fine dining restaurant, private boat dock, pre-arrival grocery service, secured owner storage, daily housekeeping and on-site property management.

Huatulco Area Activities: Scuba diving/snorkeling, whitewater rafting the River Capolita, sea kayaking, surfing, jungle tours, chartered fishing tours, horseback riding, low-key nightlife.

Golf courses in Kerala, India are being increasingly brought in to focus due to the environmental and social problems that they engender.

Kerala Tourism Watch, a coalition of civil society activists and local communities, along with Equations and Kabani – the other direction, have urged the Kerala government to close the Trivandrum golf club and abandon its golf course. The coalition believes that the environmental and social impacts warrant a more fundamental approach of dissolution rather than changing the ownership from private to public.

The golf courses are being increasingly brought in to focus due to the environmental and social problems that they engender. Everywhere in the world, golf courses have been a major threat for local communities primarily in terms of uncontrolled ground water depletion. Trivandrum golf course for example has been reportedly consuming lakhs of liters of water every day to maintain the grass turf. Conservative estimates by various international agencies show that an 18-hole golf course would consume 50 lakh liters of water a day, enough for nearly 10,000 families in a state like Kerala. We must remember that the water consumption by the Coca cola plant at Plachimada had been 5 lakh liters a day. It is hardly surprising that the arrears towards water charges of Trivandrum Golf Club ran in to several lakhs of rupees. At a time when the common people in the city face acute water shortage, maintaining a golf course with direct and indirect state subsidies violate principles of social justice.

The argument that the golf courses would promote tourism in the state is completely unfounded, accordling to the coalition. Studies have shown that tourists visiting destinations in developing countries, including India, belong to the low spending segment of international travelers, and that it is unlikely that they will be interested in golf. Alternatively, they feel that golf courses will not be an adequate incentive for high spending travelers to visit destinations in poor countries, and that allowing golf courses to flourish disregarding their environmental and social impacts will only serve the interest of the local elites.

The coalition demands that government should take back this valuable property and sees this opportunity to convert it into a bio diversity park. The coalition strongly condemns the attempt by club authorities to use the tourism façade to legitimise their elitist biases and vested interests.

Even further, the coalition is demanding that existing courses in Trivandrum and Kochi be immediately closed down, as well as shelving the proposed one in Nedumbassery, noting that the Nedumbassery project involves land acquired by evicting local people in the name of Nedumbassery International Airport. Tourism department and government of Kerala should pay attention to the concerns raised by national and international movements which oppose golf courses on environmental and social grounds.

For more information, visit www.keralatourismwatch.org.
