Investing in green initiatives makes good business sense for family-owned vacation-stays like Irwin Inn, a four season, full service, luxury lakefront resort in the Kawartha Lakes tourist region of Ontario. The inn is aiming to reduce its ecological footprint while lowering expenses and increasing efficiency for its guests.

For three generations, the Irwin family have owned and operated The Irwin Inn on beautiful Stoney Lake in the Kawartha Lakes tourist region of Ontario. Over the years they have witnessed tremendous changes in the tourist industry and many fluctuations in the economy. In order to remain successful, they have had to keep up with emerging trends in society and to make the appropriate changes to their resort business to reflect the changing times. In today’s uncertain economy, it is more important than ever to have a clear understanding of what your customer wants and to do everything that is necessary to successfully provide it in a way that is economically feasible.

One recent and significant trend in society is the public’s increased awareness of environmental issues such as climate change. Over the past decade the number of eco-tourism and environmentally friendly resorts has increased dramatically. Preserving the environment is our social responsibility. It is not only good for business in attracting environmentally concerned customers; it can also help in reducing operating cost as well. For many years, Irwin Inn has made a priority of protecting the environment, practising conservation and adding to and improving their energy efficiency. “The Irwin Family, realize that it is the natural environment that has sustained our family and enabled it to grow successfully by attracting visitors to the area with Stoney Lake’s natural beauty and heritage. We are whole-heartedly committed to preserving and promoting our natural environment by doing everything we can to reduce our eco-footprint,” states Rob Irwin, now representing the third generation of the Irwin Inn.

The Irwin Family is pleased to welcome back Rob Irwin to The Irwin Inn. An environmentalist, Rob brings a wealth of knowledge in natural and sustainable building to The Irwin Inn. He has begun the implementation of exciting ideas to further reduce the resort’s carbon footprint, and to effectively market The Irwin Inn, as an environmentally responsible business.

This year Irwin Inn is making improvements to and expanding the resort’s solar thermal system, which has heated the resort’s hot water for over 15 years. Their goal is to heat almost 100% of their water by using only the sun. Clotheslines are being re-installed in Irwin’s laundry facilities to further reduce energy use. The resort’s well-established composting system will continue to be expanded. Adding to the compost bins in the commercial kitchen, bins will be installed in each accommodation to collect waste from coffee grounds and produce. This will not only save immensely in costs, it will enable Irwin’s resort property and farm to be enriched year after year. Irwin Inn is also working with local food suppliers to establish quality sources for local and/or organic food and wine to offer their guests. Buying food that is produced locally not only provides fresher food but also reduces transportation costs and pollution. Previous Irwin Inn conservation and eco-friendly initiatives will continue as well, such as the Inn’s lake source geothermal system, which provides air conditioning to the main inn building and lakeside cottages and their policy of using only environmentally friendly cleaning products in all areas of the resort. A dispenser system in bathrooms continues to eliminate amenity wrappers and bottles. Irwin Inn enables resort guests to play at part in conservation by posting in all accommodation units easy ways that guests can help conserve and protect the environment.

“In this our 62nd year in business, we are working hard to find new ways to continue offering our guests an exceptional level of service and a fantastic experience. Due to the present economic climate taking hold of the entire world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue offering the diverse range of activities and maintaining the excellent service and hospitality our guests return for year after year. Now more than ever, we realize our guests want more value for their dollar than ever before. By continuing to implement eco-friendly initiatives we will be able to lower operating expenses and increase efficiency. In this way, not only can we offer our guests a value-packed Ontario resort vacation experience, we are protecting our beautiful environment for years to come,” adds Rob Irwin.

About Irwin Inn
Located on Stoney Lake in Ontario’s popular Kawartha Lakes tourist region, Irwin Inn is a four season, full service, luxury lakefront resort offering friendly service, superior accommodations, fine dining and deluxe amenities including a 9-hole golf course, English riding stable, and tennis. The perfect destination for family vacations, romantic couples getaways, seniors’ holidays; Irwin Inn is also the ideal Ontario resort for weddings, small conferences and reunions.

Amelia Island hotels are providing visitors with many eco-friendly options including green lodging, complimentary bikes and more.

(PRWEB) – Eco-minded visitors to the northeast Florida coast can now reduce their carbon footprints with a number of offers at some of the most luxurious Amelia Island hotels, resorts and inns. At just 13 miles long and two miles wide, Amelia Island offers a big Florida beach vacation adventure in one small package – perfect for ‘green’ travelers who want to put it in park and save some gas.

Amelia Island Plantation Goes Green
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently awarded the sprawling Amelia Island Plantation its Green Lodging destination certification making it the first accommodator on the island to earn this coveted designation. The Plantation offers a resort-wide recycling program, which includes glass, plastic, aluminum and newspapers, plus electronics. The resort also shows its commitment to being ‘green’ through its use of automatic and low flush water fixtures in guest and public restrooms, resort-wide low energy and long lasting fluorescent lighting, the Project Planet linen and towel re-use program, and clean and green pest control and housekeeping products, as well as many other initiatives. Guests visiting the Plantation this fall can also expect to save some green in their wallets thanks to lower off season rates.

‘Growing Green’ At The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island recently launched Give Back Getaways (http://www.givebackgetaways.com/), a unique voluntourism program that allows guests to spend a portion of their vacation making a positive impact on the lives of others. During the half-day “Growing Green” experience, visitors will share their love of nature with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County, helping them expand their garden plot and build a compost area for a fresh crop of flowers, trees and organic vegetables. No green thumb? No problem. Guests will put up some gardening tips of the their own as together they learn the basic disciplines of planting, growing and harvesting an environmentally sustainable garden. “Growing Green” will be offered on September 26, October 24 and November 21, 2008.

Bed & Breakfast Inns Offering Free Bicycle, Scooter Rentals
Several of the island’s renowned bed and breakfast inns are offering guests complimentary use of rental bicycles during their stay. The Ash Street Inn, Addison on Amelia, Hoyt House and Fairbanks House are all giving guests this special chance to “park it” during their stay. The Florida House Inn goes one step further by offering guests complimentary use of energy-saving motor scooters. Several of the island’s inns are located in or near the Historic District of Fernandina Beach, which offers an array of dining, shopping and activities.

The Eco-Friendly Route
Guests at the Amelia Island Plantation can rent bicycles and motorized golf carts for use on the 1350-acre property, and can take the resort shuttle to downtown Fernandina Beach (adults $16, children 12 and under are free). As an eco-friendly addition to any Florida island vacation, the Amelia Hotel at the Beach also rents scooters, bikes, and Electric Gem Cars to guests.

Packages Reimburse Gas and More
Many Amelia Island resorts, hotels and inns have also recently created special packages to ease the pain of high gas prices for visitors. The Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, an oceanfront bed and breakfast inn, is offering a ‘Park & Petal’ Package*, which includes a three-night stay, daily buffet breakfast, a picnic lunch for two each day, and a daily bike rental. The Hampton Inn, Amelia Island is offering guests a ‘We’ll Fuel Your Fun’ Package*, which includes a two-night stay and a $50 gas card.
*Both packages are based on availability and subject to restrictions by the accommodation. The “We’ll Fuel Your Fun” package ends on September 30, 2008.

About Amelia Island
Located just off Florida’s northeastern coastline, Amelia Island is a barrier island rich in colorful history and breath-taking natural beauty. Its long, beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife, and pristine waters have made the island a favorite destination for outdoor adventure. Upscale resorts with world-class spas, championship golf and exclusive dining blend effortlessly with a captivating collection of bed and breakfast inns and historic districts. The island is home to Fernandina Beach, once a vibrant Victorian seaport village, and now a charming downtown district of eclectic shops, attractions, and eateries.
Thailand inStyle announces the inclusion of The Old Bangkok Inn to its highly selective portfolio of boutique hotels in Thailand.

Thailand inStyle has just announced that it has included the Old Bangkok Inn to its highly selective portfolio of hotels and boutique hotels in Thailand. A former palace located in the heart of Rattanakosin at the very heart of Bangkok’s historical and cultural center, the building that now houses the Old Bangkok Inn was left to decay and in a highly dilapidated state became a noodle house before being fully renovated and reincarnated into the 10-room Bangkok Inn.

According to Thailand inStyle, today’s “eclectic” travelers look for experiences that reflect their own tastes and values.

Miguel Cunat, CEO of Thailand inStyle, said, “We aim to provide that discerning group of travelers with something which is instantly recognizable and appreciated. We define Style as being authentic, detailed, seamless, textured, unpretentious and natural with a personality that exudes innate individuality and The Old Bangkok Inn fulfills and surpasses each of these qualities.”

“If you like a hotel to be more like a home, then you’ll love the Old Bangkok Inn,” wrote Lisa Rosenfeld, TIME Magazine, June 6, 2006.

In its selection process, Thailand inStyle evaluates hotels, boutique hotels and villas in Thailand (http://www.thailandinstyle.com ), pigeon-holing the chosen few in various different categories, from ultra innovative and hip through to properties that exude traditional and cultural values.

In Thailand inStyle’s properties, you may find properties that are faded but you wont find properties that are jaded. Location of the residence is also an important factor.

The Old Bangkok Inn () staff are always at-hand to offer helpful advise and the most practical options where transport is concerned and how to avoid Bangkok’s notorious traffic.

Suffice to say that your best options are on the doorstep in the form of Bangkok canal ferries (a truly InStyle mode of transport upon which to navigate Bangkok) and the Chao Phraya River Ferries, both of which are extremely cheap, highly efficient, sometimes a little dramatic and a great way to see the Venice of the East.

“Steering guests away from gas-guzzling taxis and toward alternative forms of transport is just one way the Old Bangkok Inn is actively distinguishing itself as an urban green hotel – one of the increasing number of places that are adopting that strategy,” wrote Jennifer Conlin, New York Times, March 16, 2008.

Thailand inStyle also provides concierge services such as chauffeur driven cars, expert guides and a wealth of local travel advise all designed to ensure that guests can sit back and derive maximum satisfaction from their time in Thailand.

About The Old Bangkok Inn
Located on the site of a former palace OBI is a restored bijou boutique B&B in the heart of Bangkok’s historic old quarter. Family run, it exudes a homely, olde-worlde ambience where personal touches and quirky decor are the norm. The glass fronted exterior and tea shop-like lobby of OBI is characterised by ornate armoires, dainty bird cages, antique furniture and jazzy music and feels not unlike the French cafes of Normandy from where the owner – charismatic Nantiya – took her inspiration. OBI is a great value hotel – unique and memorable – and one with great eco-credentials including optional charity donations at check in (which the hotel will match), solar power, water-saving taps and energy saving light bulbs.

Inspired by Thailand’s floral offerings, each room at OBI is named and decorated after one of five flowers and characterised accordingly with murals, metalwork and a specially chosen colour palette. The hotel has been designed to combine traditional elegance with modern amenities and the rooms offer a range of special features such as beautifully hand-painted ceramic washbasins, personal computers with broadband internet access and gorgeously scented toiletries with fragrances to match each floral theme. Much of the hotel has been furnished with Thai golden teak rescued and restored from the historic capital of Ayutthaya alongside generational antiques and locally made silk curtains and throws.

Delicious breakfasts, simple snacks and refreshments are available to guests at any time however since OBI is a B&B don’t expect restaurant facilities. Nantiya and her staff are great sources of information on Bangkok and many of the city’s most historic attractions including the Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha, the Queen Sirikit Gallery and the Khao San Road are all within walking distance of the hotel. OBI is a fantastic other-worldly base from which to explore the city and revel in some authentic Thai hospitality.

The Inn’s “Green Philosophy”
The Old Bangkok Inn is committed to reducing its impact on the community and on the environment, with a mission to provide the art of hospitality within a model for urban ecology by observing the “three R’s” philosophy of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. The Old Bangkok Inn is a fully non-smoking establishment and one of the few “Green Hotels” in Bangkok.

Water conservation: eco-friendly hotels are water-friendly hotels; OBI uses low-flow showerheads as well as low-flow/dual flush toilets. Additionally, OBI has also implemented a voluntary linen-and-towel-reuse program in all guest rooms.

Energy: The building is designed to use daylight for as much of each day as possible and installed in-room sensors to shut down all lights and appliances when guests leave the room. All the hot water used at OBI comes from a solar water heater system, consuming 25% less energy as a result of our greater reliance on solar power.

“Good wood”: Most of the wood furniture and all the fixtures (stairs, doors, & windows) used in OBI is rebuilt, reclaimed or salvaged from old teak wood. The quality and beauty of this teak is far greater than that of teak cut from the same species today-and the purchase of it did not bring down a single tree.

Community support: Through the “Support the Community Initiative” guests staying at the OBI are kindly encouraged to contribute US$1 per room per night to one of our designated philanthropic partners; the Old Bangkok Inn will match the contribution dollar for dollar.
